By way of background, the European Parliament, Council and Commission have been working to reform the EU’s data protection framework since 2009. Tripartite agreement on a new General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) was finally reached in December 2015.

A revised version of the GDPR was issued by the Council and approved by the Parliament.

The GDPR was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 27 April 2016 and renamed the catchy “Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC”. It comes into force on 25 May 2018.

The GDPR will significantly impact how organisations, including across the Consumer sector, collect and process personal information.
