Brexit question weighing on UK retail numbers
9 March 2016
Commenting on the latest BRC sales numbers, Susan Samuel, partner and retail expert at law firm Eversheds, says:
“The decrease in consumer spending would be exacerbated by uncertainty caused by the EU referendum, which is sparking a lack of confidence amongst consumers, retailers and investors alike. Consumers are confused about the potential impact that an exit from the EU may have on them and the economy.
“Retailers are reporting macro-economic concerns centred around the effect of an exit on the pound, and the effect that an exit would have on the labour market, jobs, prices and investment. There are also other factors to consider, such as the impact that an exit may have on retailers who operate in the UK and Europe, and the laws that regulate their trade.”
