On 14th September, the Indian Government made the landmark decision of permitting up to 51% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Multi-Brand Retail in India. The Cabinet also further liberalized FDI in Single-Brand Retail (previously announced in January this year) by approving amendments to the existing policy relating to brand ownership and mandatory sourcing requirements.

These revolutionary developments have encouraged a host of major global retailers to explore this high potential market with their eye on the Indian consumer prize which according to industry experts will expand to reach a market size of £2.3 trillion by 2020.

Valued at an impressive £345 billion and identified as being one of the top five retail markets in the world, the Indian retail industry has finally acquired its place in the global spotlight.
