Eversheds Sutherland comment: Budget 2017
8th March 2017
Commenting on what retailers will be hoping for from today's budget, James Batham, partner and head of retail at Eversheds Sutherland, says:
"Retailers will be looking to the government to set as smooth and straight a course as it can. Then of course it's about maintaining consumer confidence in the face of the falling pound and rising inflation. The current habit of governments to tax what might be called less transparent aspects of daily life such as insurance, slowly eats away at confidence and the increase in revenue sought from Stamp Duty further impacts on consumer confidence.
"Crucially, perhaps of most concern is the unsustainable and unacceptably high level of business rates. Fundamentally, the government has perhaps to grip the ugly task of reforming and dealing with local government finance that sits behind this punitive tax."
